This past week I found myself rethinking our Mother’s Day celebration. While I am very much looking forward to our annual beach day, I thought about going a day early and then spending Sunday showering my daughter with gratitude by making her favorite dinner, writing her a letter or giving her a gift…just because.
And when Hannah asked me for gift ideas, I hesitated and told her she didn’t need to spend her money…that a family beach day is more than enough.
Almost immediately, I was reminded of my Dad who says the same thing about Father’s day and his birthday. In that moment, I understood his sentiment, but I also know how it kind of takes the wind out of my sail not to be able to do something a little extra special for a man who means the world to me.

I recognized that same disappointment in my daughter when I told her not to spend her money on me, so later that evening I dropped a hint for a gift idea.
While I do understand the negative sentiment surrounding “Hallmark” holidays, and for those very reasons do not do much for Valentine’s Day, I couldn’t take the gift of giving away from my daughter who wants to do something for me. She’s excited about celebrating Mother’s Day…and so am I because I do realize how incredibly fortunate I am to have the mother I have, the family I have and the daughter I have.

While Mother’s Day is indeed a special occasion for my family, I know that for some of you, it is not. If this is true for you, I want you to know that you are in my thoughts on this Mother’s Day and that I’m sorry for your loss in whatever form that may be. I also want to say that if you have ever loved, nurtured, comforted, befriended or taken care of or looked after a child, you are indeed a mother figure to someone.

And I’ll tell you what. Your support and encouragement of Sharon E. Hines inspires me to keep doing what I’m doing. You are taking part in what I hope will one day become a legacy for my girl.
