I took a little bit of a different approach to organizing our bathroom cabinets this time around.
While I did sort like things together, I separated them by use as well as taking into account our individual organizing personalities to create a His and Hers Bathroom Cabinet Organization system.
Matt likes to keep his things close by. Keeping that in mind, I put everything he uses on a daily basis into one tub: deodorant, hair gel, comb, face wipes, prescriptions…
(I just felt like trying my hand at online drawing. I need some practice, but I had fun. That’s what counts.)
I on the other hand, prefer to categorize and compartmentalize.
So, instead of all things hair being stored in one bin, there is a bin for daily hairstyling products which usually involves dry shampoo, ponytail holders, hairbrush and hairspray. For days that I need to dry my hair, I have a basket holding the blow dryer, sea salt spray, Aquage uplifting foam and a round brush. Since I rarely use heating tools, I stowed them in a drawer out of the way.
In both cases, more frequently used items are placed in front with less used items in back. However, in both cabinets we’re only using the floor space. I’d love to take advantage of the vertical space to store towels, cleaning supplies, and extra bath supplies.
Amy at LivingLocurto.com made great use of the vertical space in her cabinets by using pull out baskets.
There’s something about a folded stack of crisp white towels that looks so inviting.

Ultimately, I prefer to add a second shelf similar to this one featured at The Budget Decorator.
I love the idea of using a lazy susan to access the products you most often use. And somehow toilet paper actually looks pretty when you put it is a basket.
My hairstyling tools drawer is just the right size to outfit with custom organization like this. #Goals
Considering that hiring a carpenter is not in the budget and that it may be awhile before I would be able to DIY the shelving, we’ll probably be living with Phase 1 for some time. The wait will be worth it because in the end, we’ll have an organization system that suits our lifestyle.
On that note, I want to leave you with a couple of tips for creating your own successful organization system.
2 Tips for Creating a Successful Organization System
- Form follows Function. Pretty is nice, but the importance of organization is that your space functions well. In order for your space to function well, consider your routine; how you use the space, what items you use in that space and how often you use them. Right now the baskets I’m using don’t match and the handle is even broken off of one of them, but that’s okay. The goal was to just get started so that we can enjoy the benefits of an organized space. Live with it awhile. Before you spend money on baskets, shelving and other organizational tools.
- Live with your organization systems and see how they work for you and your family. Make adjustments, then make purchases.

Great comments. I really like that you mention to try out a system FIRST, then buy. A fab reminder. :)I am pretty happy with our bathroom, but am still always tweaking my system. Excellent post!

Thank you, Shelly. And you brought up an important reminder as well. Every organization system will need continual tweaking. I’m always tweaking, too.
