As I checked myself in the mirror to see how the shorts fit, all the do’s and don’ts of wearing white flooded my mind.
How to Wear White
There a couple of tips I learned recently that I will help you wear white with confidence:
- Size Up
- Choose a fabric that isn’t see through.
But this next tip, well, let’s just say I was once reminded the hard way…
Choosing The Right Undergarments
I was running late, so I quickly changed into some white capris and hurried to meet my friend at the movie theater. As I rushed past a couple of ladies, I heard them whisper in disgust, “Why do people do that?” I had this feeling that they were talking about me; that my rushing past them offended them in some way.
I don’t remember the movie, nor which friend I was meeting that day, but I do remember the horror I felt when I got home that evening and saw what those ladies were complaining about.
In my rush to change clothes earlier that day, I didn’t pay attention to the fact that I was wearing bright floral panties. My face turned about two shades of bright floral pink. I knew that when wearing white, you should wear tan, nude or soft pink undergarments. Any other color will show through your white clothing. Needless to say, I now pay much closer attention when I’m planning to wear white.
Wearing White After Labor Day
I’ve always heard,“You can’t wear white after Labor Day.”
Well, times have changed and so have the rules, so before you send your whites into winter hiding, consider this…
Some say that the rule originated in the 1880’s by a group of wealthy woman who wanted to separate themselves from the women who came from “new money”. Others believe that wearing white was a look of leisure during summer vacation for the wealthy. Still others say that in times past, light weight, white clothing was the only way to stay cool during the summer months .
No one really seems to know, and more and more people are breaking the rule.
Those who believe this rule is meant to be broken make the case that Labor Day is an American holiday. So, if Labor Day marks the occasion, then how would other countries know when to stop wearing white?
I think they make a valid point. And, today’s fashion experts tell us that we can indeed wear white after Labor Day.
So here’s what fashion experts suggest for how to wear white after Labor Day:
- pops of white peeking out of a sweater or jacket.
- white denim jeans
- white outerwear
- white accessories
- white linen, or any linen, after Labor Day
- white summer dresses
- an all white outfit
However, I happen to think an all white outfit in the winter looks very chic. So, take the rules with a grain of salt.
As tempting as it was to buy those shorts so I could scratch them off my Summer shopping list, I put them back. It’s worth waiting to find something I can wear with confidence.
See you in class,
